Slimline flat roof patio on an elevated coastal home in Sorrento

Patios Sorrento

Sorrento sits between Hillarys Boat Harbour and Sorrento Beach, and its homes range from original older builds to high-end modern rebuilds and renovations.

That mix raises the bar on finish. We detail Sorrento patios so the fixings, colours and gutter lines read as part of the house rather than something bolted to the back of it.

Finish Detail on Sorrento's Renovated and Rebuilt Homes

A patio on a renovated Sorrento home is judged against the rest of the house, so the details matter more here than the headline structure does. Exposed brackets, mismatched fascia and a rough gutter join are what make a new patio look cheap.

We fix beams and headers so the hardware is concealed where the design allows, and we run the patio gutter to sit flush against the existing fascia line. The result reads as one continuous roofline instead of two separate structures meeting at an angle.

Colour selection is part of the same job. Modern Sorrento rebuilds tend to sit in a restrained palette, so we match the Colorbond roofing and powder-coated posts to the render, roof tile or metal roof already on the home.

Designing Around a Sorrento Coastal Outlook

Plenty of Sorrento blocks sit high enough to hold an ocean or coastal outlook, and the wrong patio takes it away. A post landed in the middle of the view, or a beam set at eye level from the lounge, is very hard to fix once the slab is drilled.

We work the design the other way around. The view line gets set first, then the post positions, beam depth and roof pitch are worked out to sit either side of it while still giving real shade and rain cover.

01

Sit where you will sit

We check the outlook from seated height inside and out, not just from the middle of the yard.

02

Mark the sight lines

The lines worth keeping open are marked on site before any post position is agreed.

03

Engineer the spans

Longer spans and slimline post sizing are confirmed by the engineer so posts stay clear of the view.

04

Set height and pitch

Beam depth and roof pitch are set to clear the eye line while still shedding rain away from the house.

On an elevated Sorrento block the post positions are a design decision, not a site decision. Get them right on paper and the view survives the build.

FAQs

Patios in Sorrento FAQs

In most cases yes. We set the view lines first, then work post positions and beam depth around them, using longer engineered spans where they are needed. On a badly placed existing opening we will tell you honestly what the compromise is before you commit.

Three things do most of the work: concealed fixings, a patio gutter that sits flush with the existing fascia, and colours chosen against the home's current palette. We go through all three at the measure visit and confirm the colours in writing on the quote.

Roofing comes in the Colorbond range and posts and beams are powder-coated, so there is a wide choice of colour and finish. For Sorrento rebuilds we usually recommend picking up a colour already on the house rather than introducing a new one.

It shapes the specification. Coastal homes are harder on finishes, so the powder-coat and roofing selection matter and we talk through how the finish will hold up before you choose a colour. We will also point out where a lighter or darker colour will show weathering sooner.

Almost always. Sorrento sits within the City of Joondalup, and we prepare the drawings, engineering certificate and permit application and lodge it with the council for you. The first you hear of it is when the permit is approved.

Not necessarily. We can design the patio so the structure suits the house as it stands now and the colours and roofline can be worked in with a later renovation. Tell us at the site visit what you are planning and we will design with that in mind.
